These playing-card-sized drawings, made with graphite and watercolor pencil, twist and pull at the classic forms of the modernist grid. Space is revealed to be delightfully unpredictable and lumpy, no longer smoothly consistent or mathematically measurable. The exhibition title derives from a line from Shakespeare’s Hamlet: the beleaguered title character laments, “The time is out of joint.” But the drawings add a touch of humor, as their forms persist in singing a bit “off-key”.
