2020 was a year filled with more than words can express. We suffered individually, in our families, as communities and worldwide. We were isolated and confined, broken and infected, judged and criticized. Despite 2020 being a horrific year, human loss is unfortunately not confined to that year alone. Tragically, humans are very familiar with the act of mourning.
Partnering with the DC Arts Center and community members, artist Maggie Golightly Haslam presents a memorial to grief. The artist collected responses to the question “who do you mourn?”. Each response was hand-stamped onto monolith-like plaques made from recycled paper and plastics collected throughout the year 2020. The resulting body of work is a monument to loss and a memory of those we cherish, built with hope and unity.
