USING THE DC ARTS CENTER THEATER

The 42-seat black box theater at the DC Arts Center provides an essential and accessible platform for local, national, and international theatre groups, musicians, and performance artists in one of the nation’s most artistically vibrant cities. Perfect for intimate performances, the theater is a modest but ready space with lighting and sound equipment and a small backstage. Our theater is prepared to welcome any type of performance, including full-length plays and musicals eligible for Helen Hayes nominations, find-your-own-venue Capital Fringe performances, monthly showcases, poetry readings, stand-up comedy, improv shows, independent film screenings, and album release parties. Our space can also be rented for rehearsals, auditions, photoshoots, events, meetings, and more!

For first-time or new producers, we’re happy to assist from concept to execution in any way practicable. This includes offering guidance on design, ticketing, marketing, public relations, and the like. Whether you’re newly beginning or a seasoned veteran, all performances are listed on our website and included in our regular marketing efforts.

Rental applications are accepted year-round.

RENTING THE DC ARTS CENTER THEATRE – PERFORMANCES

À LA CART RENTALS
There are two ways to rent the theatre for performances – à la cart or weekly. For performances with a short run, low technical needs, and the ability to rehearse at an alternate venue, à la cart rentals will be the most cost-effective. For à la cart rentals, all materials (sets, props, costumes, etc.) must be loaded in and struck within the time of usage provided in your rental. You have the freedom to choose which date and time you prefer for your performance from the list of available options below. All performance slots take place Wednesday through Sunday. À la cart rentals include the usage of all lighting, sound, and projection equipment.

Should you need additional hours for load-in, rehearsal, or strike, they can be purchased and added to your reservation at a rental rate of $40 per hour. Be sure to include the time needed to set up and break down your event. Unplanned overage charges apply and start at $100 per hour in addition to the regular hourly rental rate. Some restrictions may apply if performances are already scheduled before or after your reservation.

WEEKLY RENTALS
For performances that have a longer run, more advanced technical needs, are interested in rehearsing in the space before opening (think technical rehearsals), and wish to store sets, props, and costumes in the theatre without having to remove them before and after each performance, a weekly rental is the most cost-effective option. For weekly rentals, you have full access to the theater space to utilize however you’d like for the duration of your reservation. This option also removes any stress or pressure related to the fear of overage charges or the need to anticipate your hourly need accurately. You have the freedom to choose which date and time you prefer for your performances, rehearsals, and any ancillary programming you may wish to add to your schedule (think performance talkbacks or meet-the-cast opportunities). However, all public programming can only take place Wednesday through Sunday. The weekly rental rate is $1,500 per week.

RENTING THE DC ARTS CENTER THEATRE – REHEARSALS

You are having a rehearsal if you meet all of the following requirements:

you are preparing for a future live performance or presentation;
there is no audience during this preparation;
there is no advertising taking place regarding this preparation; and
there is no revenue generation during this preparation.

If you meet all of the requirements above, the rehearsal rental rate is $40 hourly with a two-hour minimum.

RENTING THE DC ARTS CENTER THEATRE – EVENTS

Our space can also be rented for auditions, photoshoots, local film shoots, events, meetings, and more! Event rentals that do not fall into the performance or rehearsal categories above are charged a flat rate of $250 for a four-hour rental. Additional hours may be purchased on an as-needed basis at $50 an hour. Be sure to include the necessary amount of time to set up and break down your event. Unplanned overage charges apply and start at $100 per hour in addition to the regular hourly rental rate.
