Exploring the Intersection of Movement and Art with Pixie Alexander

  • DC Arts Center 2438 18th Street Northwest Washington, DC, 20009 United States (map)

In this Artistic Process Workshop at The DC Arts Center, artist Pixie Alexander will lead participants in exploring the intersection of movement and studio art practice. Using a series of exercises designed to enhance empathy, synesthesia, and form-making, Pixie will draw from 38 years of experience studying painting and modern dance to examine the ways in which movement and visual art can inform and influence one another. The workshop will begin with a warm-up that incorporates movement and discussion, followed by the creation of large-scale drawings on paper. Participants will also explore the concept of einfuhlung, or in-feeling, which emphasizes the importance of empathizing with both human experience and organic forms, as well as the movements of ancestors and natural elements like water. Throughout the exercises, Pixie will guide participants to consider the differences between Western, grid-based movement and more organic forms, and how they can be used to express different emotions and experiences. This workshop is a unique opportunity for artists and dancers of all levels to deepen their understanding of movement and art-making.
