FROM THE ARTIST
My artistic endeavors delve into the interplay between the sensibilities of the Black diaspora and the urban landscapes they inhabit. While I draw inspiration from esteemed artists such as Kara Walker and Jean-Michel Basquiat, I also find profound influence in the world surrounding me. I am captivated by the sensations of movement, the deconstruction and reassembly of surfaces, and the intricate processes of forgetting and remembering that shape our collective consciousness.
ABOUT QRCKY
Qrcky's artistic journey commenced in the 1970s in southern Virginia, where the art world was a distant echo in his family's cultural landscape. Despite this, Qrcky was entranced by the masterpieces of Chuck Jones, Norman Rockwell, and Bob Ross. His fascination led him to spend countless hours attempting to emulate their styles, all while immersed in cartoons. However, it wasn't until two decades later, amidst the challenges of a difficult marriage and subsequent relationships, that Qrcky rekindled his connection with art as a means of self-expression. Drawing upon the creative freedom of his childhood, Qrcky sought refuge in the realm of painting, discovering a distinctive voice that was uniquely his own. To fully engage with his artistic calling, Qrcky chose a path of solitude, temporarily distancing himself from friends and family. This intentional isolation allowed him the focus needed to create his most impactful works, even amid emotional turmoil and a sense of displacement. Through this immersive process, Qrcky found solace and a profound sense of contentment and completeness within the realms of his art.
