FROM THE ARTIST
Ramsey’s artistic process blends elements of popular culture with bright colors and current events to create pieces that attempt to prompt questions, and twist the familiar into something strange and emotionally unsettling. Cartoon imagery is used frequently in Ramsey’s work. The use of bright, bold, and light-bending color plays heavily into Ramsey’s visual language. Often used to draw the viewer into the work, whether the viewer observes the art as a collection or as individual pieces, the aim is to create a narrative encapsulated by brightness with a dreamlike quality that may tip into oddness or darkness.
ABOUT TREY RAMSEY
Trey Ramsey is a self-taught multidisciplinary visual artist focused on creating works that reveal the wonders and worlds he sees that run parallel to the “world” we all live in. His journey as an artist was sparked in early childhood by Saturday morning cartoons, mythology and comic books, and he uses these familiar themes to frame his artistic stories and explore perspectives that are often ignored or considered unimportant by society at large. The nostalgic imagery, color palettes, and elements of popular culture used within his work blend together to create pleasing images that challenge the viewer on closer inspection. Ramsey’s work examines tough or uncommon topics, and twists what is considered familiar into something strange and emotional.
Ramsey is an aspiring toy designer, author, actor and avid sketch artist. He has published short stories, a Children's book, and will soon be opening an online shop that will feature curated items that can be purchased from his prolific multifaceted output.
Ramsey earned a BFA in Theater Arts from Howard University and was named a 2024 DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities Fellow. Trei lives and works in Washington, D.C.
