Jeff Soifer

“My work is driven by fun and whimsy—little studies of thoughts that make me smile (except for my self-portrait—that’s just me). Most of these pieces begin as linoleum block prints. I love the line quality that linoleum creates; the inconsistencies, textures, and happy accidents bring an organic sensibility, even when I add color digitally. My monoprints take this organic feel even further—the textures and unexpected remnants remind me of old photographs, which seem to suit the derby-wearing characters that populate my work. As for the paintings…I just like frogs. And I enjoy painting on whatever I have around the house. These little guys make me smile, and paper bags turned out to be the perfect canvas for these grouchy fly-catchers.”

From the Artist

Jeff Soifer is a self-taught artist, graphic designer, husband, and father whose creations emanate from his lived experiences.. The pieces he produces are an innate part of who he is and how he chooses to find and create beauty. Like a poem, Jeff’s vision is based in wonderment and curiosity, leading the viewer down offbeat and playful paths that question perspective and stretch the imagination.

Jeff is a master of many mediums including painting, block printing, etching, photography, collage, digital painting, pen and ink, and pencil sketching. He makes the most of any material at his disposal, be it a standard printer, leftover house paint, old cardboard, or paper grocery bags. With all mediums, Jeff’s unfiltered approach creates an immediacy that pushes against traditional technique and imbues his work with a purity of form and character.

Heavily influenced by the pop art movement, poster art, and graphic design, luminaries such as Joseph Muller-Brockmann, Jean Dubuffet, and Alice Neel play into Jeff’s desire to create work that is visually bold and textured, yet simple. He also draws inspiration from children’s book illustrators such as Lane Smith, Christian Robinson, and Jon Klassen. While young at heart, it was through raising his own children that Jeff’s work grew in imagination and in meaning, finding new ways to tell the story of lineage, legacy, and laughter.

Jeff’s eclectic body of work is endlessly entertaining and welcoming, freeing the viewer from inhibition, often leaving them with a heartfelt smile.
